Why We Built Kumo

A trip is a group project the moment more than one person is going. Kumo exists because most trip-planning tools still treat it like a solo one.

The problem we kept running into

Plan a trip with other people and the plan ends up scattered everywhere:

  • Flights — buried in a chat thread
  • Itinerary — a shared doc nobody keeps updated
  • Who-owes-what — a mental tally, or yet another app
  • The actual conversation — a group text that outlives the trip by years

Nobody owns the plan, so everybody re-asks the same question the day before departure.

Kumo puts the itinerary, group chat, route, and running expense total in one place — shared by everyone, updated in real time.

Your trip is yours

No third-party analytics or advertising SDKs, and we don't sell your data. A travel-planning tool doesn't need to be an ads business on the side.

Built for groups, not just individuals

Every core feature — itinerary, chat, expenses, route — is designed around a trip with multiple travellers on it from day one, not bolted on later. A plus-one or a kid on the trip can be added with just a link, no account of their own required.

One app, not five

If a feature belongs to trip planning, it belongs in Kumo — not in a separate app you have to context-switch into.

Common questions

Do the people I'm travelling with need to download the app or create an account?

They don't need an account or even a name.

  • A Captain can add a Hitchhiker with just a shareable link — no login, no signup, no account of their own.
  • They'll still need the Kumo app or the web page at kumo.travel to see the itinerary, chat and map.
What's the difference between a Captain, Crew, and a Hitchhiker?
  • 🧭 Captain — owns the trip, has a full account.
  • 🧳 Crew — also full account holders, can jump between every trip they're part of.
  • 🎒 Hitchhiker — no account at all, joins through a shared link only, with no name or other details needed.
Is my trip data private?

Yes.

  • No third-party analytics or advertising SDKs, and we never sell your data.
  • Login is protected with TOTP two-factor authentication.
  • Every account is 18+, enforced at the database level — not just a signup checkbox.
  • Data is hosted in the EU (Frankfurt).
  • Deleting your account is immediate and permanent, with no retention window.
What platforms will Kumo be available on?
  • iOS and Android.
  • The web — sign in at kumo.travel to reach your itinerary even if you lose your phone, which happens more than you'd think on a trip.

Kumo is in late-stage development, in beta ahead of launch.

Does Kumo work for organisations and teams, not just personal trips?

Yes — Work Mode is built for business travel:

  • An org-scoped trip list.
  • Join codes for self-serve onboarding.
  • An admin approval queue for submitted expenses.

All alongside Kumo's personal-trip features.

How much does Kumo cost?
  • Kumo will be free to start.
  • We're still finalizing how Premium works and what it costs, and we'll publish the details before launch.
  • Enterprise customers looking at Work Mode for their organisation should get in touch at support@kumo.travel.
